VENEZUELA: Inflation picks up

President Hugo Chávez 's heterodox economic policies are beginning to create problems. The government not only sets interest rates, but also tries to direct bank lending. The government is also pushing through wage increases while at the same time trying to neutralise the effect of its exchange control policy by trying to soak up the excess liquidity by issuing domestic debt.
